Time is everything

Everything else is negotiable

Capital, people, systems. You can get more of all of them. Not time.

, 2 minute read

Seneca opened his letters to Lucilius with a line worth framing: Omnia, Lucili, aliena sunt, tempus tantum nostrum est. Everything else belongs to someone else. Only time is ours.

Two thousand years on, it still holds. Money can be raised. People can be hired. Systems can be bought, and frequently are, at great expense. Time cannot be raised, hired or bought. It only leaves.

That makes speed the master variable. Not one goal among many. The goal that makes the others possible.

Most delay is not work

Watch any operation closely and you see the same thing. Very little time goes into doing. Most of it goes into waiting. Waiting for an approval. Waiting for a document. Waiting for the meeting where someone will decide to have another meeting.

A truck at a border post is the perfect case. The drive takes hours. The queue takes days. Nobody in that queue is working. The cargo is not getting more valuable. The capital is standing still, and the clock is running.

Speed is not about working faster. It is about removing the waiting.

Slow is a decision

Delay feels safe. It is not neutral. Every week a decision sits on a desk, its cost keeps running. The customer who leaves. The competitor who didn’t wait. The problem that grows while it is being studied.

Not deciding is still deciding. Just badly, and later.

Fast is not careless

The objection never changes. Speed causes mistakes. Sometimes it does. But slow organisations make mistakes too. They make them later, discover them later and fix them later.

Speed shortens the loop. You find out you were wrong while being wrong is still cheap.

What this site is for

Short notes on why speed matters, where it goes to die, and the people who understood it. Some of them are philosophers. One of them is David Bowie.

The counter on the front page is not decoration. It is the point.
